March 4, Zemlyanskiy reported that "Naftogaz" paid "to Gazprom 80 percent of the required amount.
March 5, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin of Russia said that if Ukraine does not pay for gas consumed in time, fuel shipments to the country would be suspended. But he noted that it is not only about the supply of gas to consumers in Ukraine, but also on the transit of fuel through its territory to Europe.
Under the current treaty Naftogaz and Gazprom at the end of January 2009, Ukraine should pay for gas consumed no later than 7 of the month following the month of delivery. In the event of disruption of payments to the parties may move to a system of advance payments until 2019.
Russia has stopped fuel supplies Ukraine in early January of this year. January 7, was suspended fuel transit through Ukrainian territory to Europe. The agreement provides for the purchase of Ukraine's Russian fuel from 20 per cent discount from the market price of gas, determined by a special formula.
