The crisis has reduced consumption of electricity in Russia.

Electricity production in Russia for the first two months of 2009 decreased by 5,9 percent compared to the same period last year and amounted to 181 billion kilowatt-hour. Energy consumption decreased by 6.3 per cent to 178 kilowatt-hour, noted in an official press release "system operator Unified Energy Systems (UES).
According to the company in February, the pace of decline slowed in the industry, as well as in the last month of winter power generation decreased by 4.3 percent over the same period last year.
Most electricity in February reached the thermal power plants - they have made 55,1 billion kilowatt-hours. This was 8,9 percent lower than a year earlier. On the development of hydropower has increased by 15,6 percent, while the NPP has not changed. Nevertheless, even the aggregate volume of production at hydroelectric power stations and nuclear power plants do not overlap volume of TPP.
Electricity production is largely dependent on economic activity of Russian enterprises. Earlier Rosstat reported that in January in Russia was inactive for about half of capacity.
Reduced electricity consumption leads to the fact that energy companies began loses profits, which they expected to spend, particularly on the investment program. In addition, the companies affected and the increase in debt for electricity. At the end of February 2009, retail power companies owe consumers a hundred billion rubles.
