According to the Secretary General of COMESA Sindizo Ngvenya (Sindiso Ngwenya), Union will help to increase trade volume of State - participants in the organization. As noted Ngvenya, the last time this figure has increased from 3.1 billion to 9.2 billion dollars, but still represents less than ten percent of potential volume.
The announcement of the establishment of a customs union will be made during the summit of the organization, which will be held June 7-8 in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. The initial meeting was held in May 2008, but postponed twice due to the economic crisis in Zimbabwe. Help the Zimbabwean economy will also be discussed at the summit.
Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa was formed in 1994. The organization brings together 19 countries with a total population of more than 400 million people. Participants in COMESA are Burundi, Comoros and Seychelles, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Egypt, Libya, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Sudan, Uganda, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
